To help you support your child's learning outside of the classroom, we publish the homework timetable to tell you when your daughter can expect to be set homework in each of her subjects.

Please help her by:

  • Providing a quiet place to work.
  • Checking the time spent on individual tasks.
  • Checking content and presentation of all homework being returned to school
  • Signing the homework planner each week.
  • Providing the school with information about any problems through the homework planner or by contacting the school directly.

Maths, English, Science and MFL (Option C) have homework 1x per week.

All other subjects have homework 1x per fortnight.

Re and PE are scatted across the timetable, so they appear on various days, according to the teaching group.

Sixth Form

All students at Bordesley Green Girls’ Sixth Form are expected to study outside of lessons.

This additional study is essential if students are to achieve or exceed their target grade.

Failure to work outside of lessons is a breach of the Sixth Form Code of Conduct and will disadvantage students in terms of their final grade.

Homework is set in order to:

  • Reinforce and consolidate work covered in lessons
  • Encourage independent and reflective learning
  • Develop research skills
  • Develop a deeper knowledge and understanding
  • Prepare students for future lessons or assessments, especially in the case of flipped learning
  • Promote an interest and joy in learning
  • Enable teachers in to make a judgement about a student’s progress and level of attainment
  • Access resources not available in the classroom.

Homework will be varied in terms of tasks and relevant and rewarding for students. In vocational courses homework may constitute on-going work on unit assignments. Deadlines for all homework will be manageable for students.

Some homework will be assessed by teachers, often using exam board criteria and assessment objectives. Assessed homework will normally be returned to a student within 10 working days. Teachers will provide clear instructions and deadlines for homework.

We recommend that for a Level 3 subject (AS, A2, BTEC, Applied, Cambridge Technical) students should study for at least as long (if not longer) as they spend in the lesson completing homework and following up on work they have covered lessons.

This means a one-hour lesson should result in 1-2 hours study later. This cannot all be completed during normal school hours; therefore students need to be working a 35-40 hours week (including lessons). For students re-sitting GCSE Maths and/or English alongside the Level 2 BTEC in WorkSkills, it is recommended that students should study for a minimum of two hours a day outside of lessons.

During the year when there are examinations or controlled assessments, homework will normally be to prepare and/or revise, where this is possible. Students are expected to work hard outside of lessons and if they fail to do so, the Sixth Form will take steps to support them.

Firefly - our virutal learning environment

Due to Sixth Form homework tasks being likely to consist of parts of extended assignments, Sixth Form homework will frequently be set as Firefly tasks which will include due dates. Depending on the task, the work may be submitted electronically or a hard copy.

Sixth Form students' are encouraged to download the Firefly app for their mobile phone or tablet which will help them in organising their independent learning.
